Activity Overview
Mill Ruins Park is located along the Mississippi River in the heart of downtown Minneapolis. This fascinating park features the historic ruins of several 19th century flour mills that were powered by the waters of St. Anthony Falls throughout the era that Minneapolis was considered to the be "Flour Milling Capital of the World". Today, visitors to the park can view the remains of several of these historic flour mills, learn about their history, and enjoy beautiful views of the Mississippi River while walking or biking.
Things to Do
- Go on a family quest as you explore the park! The Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Board has created a wonderful hour-long quest that will provide you with clues to follow through the park, as well as fascinating stories. Just print it out from this website.
- Take a stroll along the 1.8-mile St. Anthony Falls Heritage Trail - this self-guided trail features breathtaking views of the river and falls, as well as interpretive signs that will teach you about the historic area.
- Visit the National Park Service visitor center so that your child can become a Junior Ranger - once they fill out their activity booklet by completing a scavenger hunt and touring an old mill, they'll be awarded with a badge. Learn more details here.

- Bring along a camera - you'll definitely want to take photos of St. Anthony Falls and the Mississippi River as you explore the park.
- The park is a great place for a picnic! Bring along some food for the whole family and have a bite to eat in the sunshine by the ruins.
- Don't miss the Mill City Museum, which is located just across the road from the park - it provides visitors with a fun-filled interactive experience that tells the history of the Minneapolis flour milling industry.
