Activity Overview

Bartholomew's Cobble is a national natural landmark and was part of the Colonel John Ashley's estate in Sheffield, MA, is a beautiful natural site to visit, it's a rugged and exotic landscape supporting many species of plants. The name Cobble is taken from German word "Kobel" meaning rocks. More than 500 million years ago this area was a bedrock, and due to the formation of new mountains this inland sea area was exposed million of years ago. The area has walking trails, a natural history museum and you can explore nature at the natural landmark.

Things to Do

  • Visitors can tour the cobble year-round, the cobbles consist of quartzite and marble, and diverse species of more than 800 plants.
  • Th natural landmark has one of the largest cottonwood trees in the state, and a great diversity of fern species can be found.
  • The Hurlburt's hill is the highest point that gives scenic views of the surrounding valley.
  • Enjoy hiking at five miles of hiking trails, the trails pass through two small caves that kids love to explore.
  • There are open fields, beaver ponds, trees and plants and wildlife to explore.
  • Children would love to see stuffed animals at the natural history museum.
